Paraformaldehyde is white amorphous powder. It has a formaldehyde odor and is a linear polymer of formaldehyde. No fixed melting point, decomposition upon heating. The melting point is 120~170℃. Soluble in hot water and release formaldehyde, slowly soluble in cold water, soluble in caustic alkali and alkali metal carbonate solution, insoluble in alcohol and ether, its high polymer is insoluble in water. Polyformaldehyde can undergo formaldehyde-like reactions, such as chloromethylation, acetal formation with alcohols, etc. Used in synthetic resins, adhesives, pharmaceuticals, fungicides, insecticides, disinfectants, etc.
